We walked the Vanoise section in July and August 2021 and to be honest, it was not quite what we expected it to be. The main reason was actually that we didn't like the path. Around Tignes and Val d'Isère it was already not the most beautiful because of all the skilifts, but after the Col de l'Iseran where we expected the real beauty to start it ended up to be a rather boring and difficult balcony track - or at least to Bessans it was.
We were disappointed and we decided to change to the GR55 that runs from Tignes-le-Lac to Modane. It's slightly shorter than the GR5 but passes over higher mountain passes and really cuts through the Vanoise National Parc.
In terms of overnight staying both GR5 and GR55 are a challenge as we found out. Refuges are fully booked in high season and bivouac is not always allowed. Especially between Les Prioux and Modane the refuges do not allow bivouac and one has to walk either a very long day, or be creative with shuttle busses (like we did).
