After a few days of rest resulting from the knee problems I had last Friday in the final kilometers to Dasle we decide to first make a test walk. Preferably not too long, with some climbing and some descending. After checking the map we decide that actually the piece of GR5 between Les Fins and Morteau meets all criteria. We don't see why we should get up early for just such a short walk, so we take teh 13:35 bus to Les Fins. The bus stop there is along the GR5 so we can start walking straight away.
The first part through the village clearly once was a railroad track, because for just a hiking trail one wouldn't make such a nice vertical cut in the rocks. We leave the village and immediately start climbing to the viewpoint just under the summit of Mont Vouillot. The climb is sometimes steep, sometimes milder, but my knee is fine with all that.
At the summit there is a fresh wind, but the views are great. Far below us we see Morteau and it is hard to believe that we have to go all the way down there.
The first part of the descent passes through a pasture with cows and so we have to make a bit of a detour to surpass them before leaving the pasture at the other side. After that, it quietly descends until we see the first houses of Morteau. The GR5 doesn't really pass the town but just touches the outskirts. So we have to leave the route and take a rather steep tarmac road down to get back to the camping site. That all works out fine and the knee is not a problem. Mission accomplished, so tomorrow we can do a real stage again.
